What is Neurology?
Neurology deals with the functions and disorders of the nervous system and the brain. Since your brain is the central command of your body, the diseases that affect it can have a significantly negative impact on your health and wellness.
Some neurological disorders include:
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Spinal cord disorders
- Speech and language problems
What is a Neurological Consultation?
A neurologist is a specialist that treats diseases and conditions related to the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles. A consultation with a neurologist is generally something that your family doctor will recommend if they see fit. Neurological consultations can help bring some much needed insight to those suffering from common neurological symptoms such as seizures, tremors, speech disorders, speech and language problems, and more.
After your neurological consultation, we will send a thorough report back to your family doctor with a diagnosis and treatment plan if they are necessary.
Who could benefit from a Neurological Consultation?
A neurological consultation is recommended if you are suffering from an undiagnosed neurological issue. If you suffer from seizures, tremors, speech disorders, numbness/tingling in extremities or gait disorders, then you would benefit from booking a neurological consultation with us.
If you are unsure if you should book a neurological consultation, you should speak with your family doctor or contact us for more information. Our state of the art facilities and knowledgeable team can help you or your loved one get diagnosed and start treating these neurological symptoms as soon as possible.
What is an EMG or Nerve Conduction Study?
Electromyography (EMG) measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. Tiny devices called electrodes are used in an EMG, which transmit and detect electrical signals. During the EMG you will be instructed to contract and rest your muscles at different times and the activity of the muscle is recorded on a graph.
The health of your muscles and the nerve cells that control them are studied. Results can reveal abnormal muscle electrical activity in many nerve and muscle related diseases and conditions.
Who would benefit from an EMG or Nerve Conduction Study?
EMGs can detect abnormal muscle electrical activity in many neurological diseases and conditions such as, inflammation of muscles, pinched nerves, damage to nerves in the arms and legs, disc herniation and degenerative diseases such as muscular dystrophy, MS, Lou Gehrig’s disease and Myasthenia gravis. The EMG can help doctors distinguish between muscle conditions which begin in the muscle, and nerve disorders that cause muscle weakness.
EMGs are often recommended if you have signs or symptoms that may indicate a nerve or muscle disorder. Symptoms that may trigger your doctor to order an EMG include:
- Muscle pain
- Muscle Weakness
- Numbness or pain in extremities
